This group was created to help artists who need structure be productive.
Themes:
The themes are selected at random from suggestions from group members at each meetup. At our meetups we present our work based on the theme we selected during the previous meetup.
Artist Abilities:
The artists in this group work in a wide range of media including video, photography, sculpture, mixed media collage, computer illustration, painting and drawing. The skill levels of the artists range from self-taught hobbyists to professionals with decades of experience. This creates a fascinating variety in the work we present. See our "photos" section for examples of work we've done for past themes.
Meetup Structure:
Each artist is given several minutes to present their piece, and discuss what they feel is pertinent about it. We do not critique the work, but an artist may ask the group for suggestions on their own piece. After presentations, the new theme is chosen. Most meetups we include a creative exercise, which varies from brainstorming to drawing (no drawing talent required- see Exquisite Corpse album in our "Photos" section).
Frequently Asked Questions How long do your meetups take? Our meetups start at 7PM and end at approximately 9PM.
How often do you meet? Our regular meetups are on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. We've been adding some additional social art events, so check the calendar to see what's coming up.
Why are the meetups in Warwick now? We needed a new location to host our meetups. It's not easy to find a space that suits our needs (free & private). We are very lucky to have the opportunity to use the Warwick Museum of Art to host our events. It's a great space and we are surrounded by art. It's approximately a 20 minute drive from Providence. The one way streets in the area can make the museum a little tricky to find. Here a link to a good map and directions on the WMOA website:
http://www.warwickmus.... Please contact Stephanie if you have a suggestion for a Providence venue.
This is going to be my first time at one of your meetups, do I have to bring a piece of artwork? Please bring a piece of artwork based on the current theme, even if it's a real quickie.
Is there anything else I need to bring? Just a pen or pencil.
These meetups are around dinner time. Can I bring something to eat? You are welcome to bring something to eat. Also, snacks for the group to share are a big hit.
What is the next theme? Check the calendar entry for the next meetup. The theme will be listed in the description.
On your calendar you say "price of admission: one completed piece of artwork". Does that mean I have to give my artwork away? No, absolutely not. Your artwork belongs to you. It's just an expression used to encourage you to bring something to show the group.
What if my piece is not 100% completed? Your goal should be to have a completed piece of work, so try and pick projects that you can complete in the amount of time your life allows in between meetups. Don't worry, we won't send you home or kick you out if you piece isn't finished, we'd rather see you & your unfinished piece.
I finished my piece but I can't make it to the upcoming meetup. What should I do? An album is created in our "Photos" section for each theme. Please upload your image into the corresponding album. If you would like to have your work presented at the meetup in your absence, e-mail Stephanie an image and description. She will present it for you.
I didn't get to do a piece of work for this meetup. Can I come to the meetup anyway and/or bring an old piece of work? No. The purpose of the meetups is present new work we created for the group, based on the theme.
I live far away, but I like what your group is doing. Can I participate if I don't go to any meetups? Sure, just check the calendar for the current theme and feel free to upload images of your related works into the corresponding album.
Why is there a 20 person RSVP limit? That is the maximum amount of people we can comfortably sustain at a meetup. With a group any larger, it would take too long and be chaotic. RSVP early to ensure yourself a spot. Please be respectful and change your RSVP if you end up not being able to come, so your spot opens up for someone else.
Can I make a suggestion for a creative exercise? Please do! Send an e-mail to Stephanie or post you idea on our message board. Exercises we can do for free (i.e. pen, pencil, paper) are ideal.
I'd like to plan a group outing to a museum/gallery/etc. or book a shared studio session with figure model. How should I notify everyone? Post a message on the message boards and/or e-mail the group with your idea, along with a proposed date, time and place. Notify Stephanie and you can announce your idea at our upcoming meetup. The more specific your plan is, the more committed your responses will be.
Why do the meetups cost $1? The money raised is used to help cover the cost running of this meetup.com website. Any additional funds that are raised are put aside for future events. Thanks!
