This Meetup group has two main purposes: 1) discussions about movies, novels, nonfiction books, plays, music, paintings, art exhibits, poems, etc. that illustrate or involve social questions, or relations between the arts and society; 2) going as a group to movies, or concerts, museums, dance performances, open jam sessions, art exhibits, etc.
All forms of the arts and popular arts are relevant to the group, especially as they connect with questions about society. That can include movies, music, novels, paintings, architecture, urban design, plays, television shows, paintings, industrial design, kinetic art, technology as art, photography, nature photography, theatre, poetry, social science fiction, philosophical science fiction, graphic design, humor & comedy, crafts, dance, sculpture, books about any of those subjects, etc.
Any aspect of society or social science is relevant to the group, including: anthropology, sociology, history, social evolution, naturalistic philosophy, behavioral sciences, evolutionary economics, urban studies, social psychology, social philosophy, ethics, books about any of those subjects, etc., especially as they relate to examples of the arts or popular arts that illustrate or involve social questions or relations between the arts and society.
We can also go to some events as a group - for that, we can use the Message Board on this website, and we also have an Arts Events email list, where members can announce arts events in York and vicinity, to let others know about them, or to see who would like to go as a group, to a movie, concert, play, dance performance, museum, art exhibit, etc.: htttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/ArtsEvents/
This group evolved out of an existing group in the York area, so besides the people who have contacted us through the Meetup website, there are some additional local people who also participate.
Some members also participate in another group, which includes social sciences as well as relations between art and science: the Science, Society & Science Fiction group, which meets at the same location: http://science.meetup.com/81/
We meet the first Sunday of each month, 1:30 - 3:30.
Here's where we meet:
